Interviewing Creative Folk / Pippa Makgill

Interviews

Pippa Makgill is a fine artist who has just recently made the move from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast and is currently in the throes of building a new community around her as she settles into her new location. Her practice (which involves sculpture and painting) is extremely thoughtful and playful with gestural movement created within static objects. Talking to Pippa about her art you’ll understand there are not only physical layers to her work but layered conceptual ideas as well. I’m excited to see where Pippa takes her new sculptural work and the results of her recently acquired giant canvases! Let’s keep our eyes peeled on her insta!

Thanks so much Pippa for bringing your creativity to the Sunshine Coast!!

1/ Is there a main idea or theme you want people to take from your work?

I’m very experimental in my approach to making so I hope my work has a degree of playfulness, innovation and quirk.

2/ Do you consciously choose your colour palette?
No, but there seems to be a recurring use of teal and yellow I’ve instinctively gravitated towards over the years.

3/ What are you currently working on?
Trying to realise some larger paintings and my ‘perch’ painting sculptures.

4/ Why do you work in the medium that you do?
I love the plasticity of acrylic paint, the viscosity of colour and rawness of behaviour.

5/ Can you share your future vision (aka ‘the big dream’ view)?
I would love a big light filled warehouse to make work without any space constraints. I would like to realise a few exhibitions that include my paintings and sculptures.
